Trekking on Santo Antau

One hour with ferry across the water from the dry Sao Vicente lies the quite different island of Santo Antäo. The best way to experience the island is by trekking and with my captain and two of his mates from home I went on a two day trip which covered hiking down from near the top of the island through the very green and cultivated hillsides and a the next day we went hiking along a dried out riverbed. Often the top of the island is engulfed in clouds and after taking the bus up we started out in the tranquil atmosphere of the clouds more than 1500 meters above the sea. After a while the clouds suddenly let go and the very green hillsides appeared for our eyes. The hike down was mellow on old trails used by the locals for many years to get their hillside terrace areas for cultivation. On our way we met Asses, cows and happy local kids wanting their photo taken. At night we went to the town of Ponta Do Sol, which experience both the sunrise and sunset over the ocean. We had local lobster for dinner, which was good and for the night we slept in the house of some locals. I was lucky enough to pink decorated princess room and after the long hike i slept like a princess. Next day we had breakfast and said goodbye to our hosts before we went to Ribeira Grande. We hiked for a couple hours into the valley of the river where we were served local dishes (Catchupa among other hard to determine things) for lunch which was prepared by two local women in a very spartanic kitchen. After this, it was time to head back to Sao Vicente.
